The wetland
complex of the Losiny Ostrov National Park is a unique faunal reserve within
Moscow. The new display case shows 24 animal species and about a dozen plant
species, picturing life in the swamp at the height of spring. Thanks to the
professional work with the space by the museum’s artist Lyudmila Viktorovna
Litvinova, the display case has become visually larger and contains a
three-dimensional picture of nature with a full sense of presence.
A
black-headed gull and its nest with clutches are clearly visible in the
foreground. This is one of the most numerous birds on Losiny Island. Colonies of
black-headed gulls protect many aquatic and semi-aquatic birds from predators
and crows. Therefore, next to the black-headed gull there is a nest of coots, mallards,
a tufted ducks and shovelers. A marsh harrier watches the life of water birds
from a perch on the left side of the display case, and nearby, among the
thickets of a black alder, a raccoon dog hides. A much better view opened up of
a large bittern, hiding in the reed thickets, and of a female teal, the
smallest of the forest dabbling ducks. The new inhabitants of the display case
were a gray heron, created especially for this exhibition by the museum’s
taxidermist Oksana Mbita Ebele, and a male wild boar with tusks protruding from
its mouth and a powerful snout with a snout.
The plants
in the window have also been transformed. The birch and the black alder trees
were covered with new leaves. With skillful hands of senior researcher
Department of Ecology Gennady Kurilin rosemary willow, blueberry and blueberry
bushes were “grown”.
The new display
case will be of interest to all nature lovers in central Russia. It is located
on the 3rd floor of the museum, in room No. 7 in the “Interaction between Man
and Nature” section.
