“The Northern Passage” is the
exhibition project presenting beautiful embroideries on silk created by a remarkable American
artist Lauren Hartman. These inspiring art works welcome us to reflect upon the
place of man in the Arctic. Together with the staff of the State Darwin Museum,
the artist formed particular thematic showcases as comments to the main exposition
which became a creative research of the scientific natural history collection
of the museum.
The artists uses
embroidery and heraldic banners of travel societies as means of creative self
expression. The key question asked by the artist is whether mankind has the
right to the slightest influence on the genuine purity of the Arctic nature
for any commercial purposes.
Lauren Hartman creates
a new reality of the arctic territory where people and technical equipment became an almost "natural" part of the northern landscape which is now in the midst
of a continuous quest of finding the right solution to the issues of further
expansion into the wild snow-white land and a complicated relationship between human civilization and irresistible Arctic nature.
