A retrospective view on the history of Moscow district – “Akademichesky” (i.e. Academic). The exhibition tells stories and memoirs of the neighborhood inhabitants through old photographs of the times when trees were little and the multistory buildings were at their construction stage. Back then a beautiful green park didn’t exist, as well as the modern building of the State Darwin Museum – instead one could find a gully and a pub.
Considering the rest of Moscow, our neighborhood is quite small – only 20 streets. However, it is rich on cultural institutions – 20 Research Institutes of The Russian Academy of Sciences, 3 public libraries and 2 museums. Employees of the mentioned institutions provided photos and stories about the district, so did people who now live or used to live here. Visitors will also see freeze-frames from the Soviet films shot in the neighborhood.
By looking
at the buildings of Academichesky district one can see the development of
Russian architecture styles – “Stalin” and “Khrushchev” houses symbolizing Soviet
industrialism stand alongside panel buildings of 1970s – 1980s and quasi-fictional
buildings of 1990s – 2000s on the streets named after renowned scientists and
politicians.
