A
beautifully painted metal tray is a unique kind of folk craft that has been
flourishing in the village Zhostovo, Moscow Oblast, for almost two centuries.
The first workshop was organised by the local peasants, brothers Vishnyakovy,
in 1825.The main motive of painting is a floral bouquet: garden and wild
flowers of different shapes and sizes intertwine on a black background. There
are no fixed patterns in this sort of painting. The Zhostovo artists mainly use
their own imagination and creativity, so there are never two identically
painted trays.
The exhibition “Birds and Flowers” in the Darwin museum will
present the artworks of the Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation Marina
Domnikova. Marina graduated Fedoskino
School of the miniature painting and learned the skill of painting from the
great Zhostovo artists. She perfectly mastered the technique and developed her
own creative motives and images to fully express her feelings and emotions
overwhelming the soul. Marina says that she would like to cover the cold tray
with the most tender, bright and luminous colours to make it look warm and
radiant.
Marina
Domnikova is the Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation and was awarded
various medals for other creative achievements. Her works are kept at the State
Russian Museum, Mytishchi History and Art Museum, Yaroslavl Art Museum,
art galleries of Vologda region and Mytishchi district, the State Museum
and Exhibition Centre "ROSIZO", Russian culture centre in Budapest
and private collections in Russia, Germany, Slovakia, the United Kingdom, the
USA, France, Canada, Japan.
