There are names that have become an essential
and irreplaceable part of our daily life. In Moscow there is a street, a subway
station, a district and different monuments dedicated to the outstanding
Russian scientist K.A. Timiryazev. A biological museum, Russian State Agrarian University,
Institute of Plant Physiology Russian Academy of Sciences, and a variety of names
of agricultural crops immortalized the memory of the great scientist. So, how
much can you tell about Kliment Arkadievich Timiryazev?
From the first steps of
his scientific activity K. A. Timiryazev set himself two tasks: "to work
for science and to write for the people." His main researches on plant physiology
were mostly devoted to the study of photosynthesis. K. A. Timiryazev invented
the most accurate devices and the equipment necessary for all experimental
studies. Many devices created by the scientist and his scientific methods are
still used by modern researchers. Another field of his work was the popularization
of scientific achievements. The first book written by K.A. Timiryazev in his student years “Charles Darwin and his teaching”
was very successful and retains its significance until now.
K.A. Timiryazev is the
author of one of the best translations (1896) of the book “On the origin of
species” by Charles Darwin. In 1877 K.A. Timiryazev personally visited Charles
Darwin. The great British scientist lived in a small provincial place named
Down. Charles Darwin was already rather weak, so his family protected him from
many unwanted visitors from all over the world. However, Charles Darwin was
glad to see the scientist from Russia. Their conversation lasted for a long time
because it was the meeting of two great minds, the one which discovered the law
of development of life on the planet and the one that wanted to understand the
origin of a living substance.
The scientific works of
K. A. Timiryazev are repeatedly reissued and retain their scientific importance
at present time.
