This year the
ethnographic series of exhibition projects at the Darwin museum is continued by
the ancient city of Torzhok and its unique folk arts and crafts. The exhibition "New motifs of Torzhok: today and a hundred years ago presents the
history of national clay toys in Torzhok, and the local tradition of gold
embroidery depicting fairy birds, animals, and exquisite floral designs.
Modern clay toys in
Torzhok differ from the earlier ones in colourful brightness, molding techniques,
new images of animals and a particular individual touch of authors. This new style
is well recognized in the creative works of many artists who greatly
contributed to the revival of toy industry in Torzhok in the 1960-70es: G.A.
Klimovskaya, L.M. Zavarzina, N.P. Stekolnikova, and V.V. Arakcheeva. The
exhibition also features the original toys with melodious tunes created by V.I.
Sitnikov.

for its gold embroidery since the 13th century. Today this priceless tradition
is continued by the "Torzhok seamstresses" factory.
