On 15 May the State Darwin Museum will present a new
exhibition “Who invented football?” about animals as first inventors of sports
games. The project is dedicated to the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia.
Animals and birds
started playing games long before a prehistoric human took a stone tool in his
hands. Sports games among animals are very similar to human ones such as tag,
hide-and-seek or play-fight. Many zoopsychologists, ethologists and comparative
psychologists including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, Charles Darwin and
Nadezhda Ladygina-Kohts explored the origin of games among animals in their works. Wonderful scientific
discoveries and originals of some scientific works from the rare books fund
will be presented at the exhibition. How old is football and who was the first
player in the history of mankind? A special part of the exhibition will be
dedicated to the most popular team game in the human world. The exhibition
marks special dates in the football history of Russia from the end of the 19th
century until present days, tells about which animals were chosen as the
official mascots of the FIFA World cup in different years, including Zabivaka the
wolf, the mascot of 2018.
