Tokyo is a capital of
another planet named Japan. It’s a city where advanced technologies harmoniously
coexist with ancient traditions. Andrey Martynov, the curator of the project, spent a few years working on the “Tokyo Stories” to show
Tokyo seen through the eyes of Japanese and foreign photographers who visited
the city from Italy, Russia, China, Finland, Spain and other countries. The
exhibition presents over 150 works depicting different Tokyo over the 1980 – 2014
period. The exhibition is dedicated to the Year of Japan in Russia.
Andrey Martynov says
that the idea of the photography project about Tokyo had been on his mind for a
very long time but he started working on its implementation only in spring 2014. As
a result, he managed to collect different works of Japanese and other foreign
photographers who visited Tokyo in various years. The gallery presents documentary
and conceptual photographs in colour as well as black and white created by
mature photographers and aspiring professionals.
The exhibition project
gives a panoramic view of Tokyo through personal impressions of such well-known
photographers as Lorenzo Uccellini (Italy), Yoichiro Kato (Japan), Carlos
Escolastico (Spain), Shintaro Sato, (Japan) and many others.
Andrey Martynov is a curator
of over 200 international and local exhibition projects in photography,
graphics and contemporary art. He is an art director of international festival
of contemporary photography “Another dimension” (since 2006, Novosibirsk) and a
general director of the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art (2008-2016).
