Bestiary* is the annual exhibition and curatorial project of the
sculptor Peter Khokhlovkin. This project has been regularly held at the State
Darwin Museum for almost 20 years, and revealed many new names in animal art.
Bestiary presented creative works of both amateur and experienced artists such
as Tatiana Kapustina, Eugenia Dubrovina, Artyom Vlasov, Yekaterina Shubniakova,
Ramil Sherifzianov, Elena Surovtseva and many others.
This ancient and rare genre gives great freedom to an artist, from
thorough realism to archaic and futuristic styles. Bestiary is one of few
exhibitions where the exhibition committee mostly includes participating artists
themselves which preserves the democratic traditions of artistic brotherhood.
That is why each new exhibition is a surprise. We only know that this year it
will present art works depicting not only fauna but also flora in sculptures,
paintings and graphics.
* In the Middle Ages bestiaries were illustrated books with information about various animals both imaginary and real (from Latin “bestia”, “animal”).
