New arrival in the museum funds – mold of the ocean sunfish

The collection of plastotypes and molds of our museum has been replenished with a new exhibit. The taxidermist of the museum Oksana Mbita Ebele has made a mold of an ocean sunfish (Mola mola Linnaeus, 1758)  by making a cast of the fish that died in the Oceanarium No. 1 at the shopping center “RIO”. The work was done with a distinguished professionalism.

The sunfish is the heaviest of modern osseous fish. Its length can reach three meters. The Guinness World Records contains information on individuals, whose length was 3.1 m., height - 4.26 m. and weight was more than 2 tons.

The sunfish lives in tropical and temperate waters of all oceans. These fish are found at a depth of 800 m. They have a disciform body that is flattened from both sides. The dorsal and anal fins are shifted back to form the tail plate. The skin is devoid of scales. Teeth grown together form a "beak". Abdominal fins are absent. The color is bluish or grayish brown. They feed mainly on jellyfish and other pelagic invertebrates. This is the most fertile species among vertebrates. The sunfish produces up to 300 million fish eggs at a time.
